ROAR

Recreational Opportunities Allowing Respite

The ROAR scheme (Recreational Opportunities Allowing Respite) takes groups of adults with Learning Disabilities out on social activities in the community. As a result unpaid carers receive well deserved respite. Members are able to make more of their social lives and free time; improve their social skills, confidence and independence; enjoy activities and some times try new things. Where spaces are limited, priority has to be given to people living with unpaid carers due to the way the scheme is funded.

The ROAR scheme organises a monthly programme of activities. Most activities take place in the Dacorum area though we do sometimes go further afield. Members are expected to book their places for activities and they are offered at minimal cost. There is no membership fee to join ROAR. Members receive a Membership card, a monthly programme of ROAR activities and a monthly ROAR Newsletter.

New members must complete an application form and a carer must complete a risk assessment for that person before they are able to join the scheme. This is so we can ensure that an individuals needs can be met.

The scheme aims to accommodate people with varying degrees of learning disabilities who may also have other special needs. Liz is happy to discuss the needs of individuals and aims to include everyone; however it may be dependent on her being able to provide 1:1 or personal care where necessary. Some activities may not be suitable for everyone

All activities are organised and led by the scheme co-ordinator Liz Walker assisted by trained volunteers. All volunteers are CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked and receive training and support.
